What kind of work do you do now?
I am currently a Visiting Professor in the Energy Planning Department, at the Graduate School of Engineering of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PPE/COPPE/UFRJ). I lecture M.Sc. and doctoral courses about bioenergy technological innovations, low carbon energy systems, climate policy, and environmental co-benefit strategies. Additionally, I coordinate research work to assist the Brazilian Government in implementing its climate targets under the New Climate Agreement. I am also a consultant for Brazilian and international industries and institutions to develop low carbon roadmaps and strategies to deploy renewable energies in the Latin American region.
What did you learn in Urban Environmental Engineering?
My doctoral work was related to the analysis of advanced biofuel production and use in vehicular fleets. During my studies, I developed a life cycle assessment methodology to evaluate the energy and global and local environmental implications of producing cellulosic ethanol, in Brazil, and jatropha diesel substitutes, in India. Under the guidance of my supervisors, I learnt advanced analytical skills to conduct independent and original research work. I also gain the ability to work in interdisciplinary and multicultural environments during field surveys and lecture team-works. Additionally, I became proficiency in communicating with diverse public in “Kenkyukai” meetings and academic conferences.
