当教室は、1987年に開設以来37年にわたり留学生に対する日本語教育を行ってきましたが、今年度(2023年3月末日)をもって終了することになりました。開設時は都市工学専攻に在籍する英語特別コースの留学生およびその配偶者を主な対象としていましたが、対象者が徐々に工学系全体に広がりました。2015年から単位制が導入、2017年以降は工学系日本語教室のSTARシステムにも参加するようになりプログラムとしての基盤が整備されてきましたが、2023年度をもって幕を閉じることになりました。
開講以来参加した学生は延べ1000人を超え、日本語教育に携わった教師は14人に上ります。専攻の先生方や事務職員の方々、そして学生やボランティアの方々など、多くの人々の協力に支えられて今日に至りました。
当教室は、1987年の開設当初の工学部8号館から14号館に移転、その後2号館へ、そして再び14号館に戻るなど3回の引っ越しをしましたが、時代の変化に対応しながら少しずつプログラムやカリキュラムの改編、教材の開発を行ってきました。しかし、学生が語った「日本語教室は私たちのオアシスです」という言葉に支えられ、教室が学生にとって少しでも居心地の良い場になればと願いながらの日々でした。
当教室で培った経験や研究の蓄積が、今後は新たなステージで留学生教育の一助となることを願います。

初級教材『げんき』（ジャパンタイムズ出版）提出漢字からアカデミックな漢字語彙・表現の学習へつながるように、初級からの自律学習用の漢字・語彙・用例検索ツールを作成している。資源としては『理工学系話し言葉コーパス』＊にある都市環境と都市計画の分野のコーパスで、『げんき』提示の単漢字を含む漢字熟語をリスト化し用例や訳語・訳文（英語・中国語・韓国語・タイ語）が検索できるようになっている。なお。訳語に関しては、現在もなお追加・修正作業を継続中。
＊『理工学系話し言葉コーパス』とは、工学系日本語教室および都市工学専攻日本語教室の有志の教師（在籍者および元在籍者10名）によって2007年から構築してきた東京大学大学院工学系における7分野でのゼミなどの録音データを文字化したもの。これを資源として作成した語彙・用例検索ツールとして『レインボー』がある。留学生の研究生活を支える日本語の自律学習を可能とするもので、見出し語には英・中・韓の訳語を付し、それに研究室で実際に話された用例、その用例中の重要な表現や文法項目の提示、品詞情報などがあり、調べたい語と用例を日本語(漢字・ひらがな・ローマ字)、英語、中国語、韓国語で検索することができる。こちらも、学習者のみならず、日本語教師の教材作成のための参考資料として使っていただきたい。

This class has provided Japanese language education for international students for 37 years since its establishment in 1987 but will be terminated at the end of this academic year (end of March 2023).
At the time of its establishment, the program mainly targeted international students and their spouses enrolled in the English Special Course in Urban Engineering, but the target population gradually expanded to include all those in the School of Engineering. However, the program will end in 2023.
Since its inception, a total of over 1,000 students have participated in the program, and 14 teachers have been involved in Japanese language education. We have been supported to reach the present day by the cooperation of many people, including faculty members of the department, administrative staff in the department, as well as students and volunteers.
The classroom has moved three times, from the Faculty of Engineering Bldg. 8 when it was first established in 1987 to Bldg. 14, then to Bldg. 2, and back to Bldg. 14 again, but we have continued to adapt to the changing times, reorganizing our programs and curriculum, and developing teaching materials on an ongoing basis until the present. We have been supported by the words of our students, "The Japanese language class is our oasis," and we have spent our days wishing that the class would be as comfortable as possible for our students.
We hope that the experience and research accumulated in our Japanese language class will contribute to international student education at a new stage in the future.

The search tool for Kanji, vocabulary, examples, etc., for learners from beginner level to possible academic communication, created by our Japanese language teachers and teachers from other universities, has been moved from the Urban Engineering website to the following site.

We are creating a kanji vocabulary and usage example search tool for autonomous learning from beginner level so that it can lead to learning academic kanji vocabulary and expressions from the beginner level material "Genki" (Japan Times Publishing Co., Ltd.) submitted kanji. The resource is a list of examples in the field of urban environment and urban planning from "The Science and Engineering Spoken Japanese Corpus"*, which lists Kanji compound words containing single Kanji characters presented in "Genki" and allows users to search for examples and translations (English, Chinese, Korean, Thai). Translations are still being added and corrected.
"The Science and Engineering Spoken Japanese Corpus" is a corpus of recorded data of seminars in seven fields of engineering at the Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, which has been created since 2007 by volunteers (10 current and former teachers) of the Japanese Language Class of School of Engineering and Japanese Language Class of Urban Engineering. “Rainbow" is a vocabulary and example search tool created using this data as a resource. It is designed to enable autonomous learning of the Japanese language that supports the research lives of international students. Headwords are accompanied by English, Chinese, and Korean translations, and examples of usage spoken Japanese sentences in laboratories, important expressions and grammatical items in the examples, and part-of-speech information are provided, the site can be searched in Japanese (kanji, hiragana, romaji), English, Chinese, and Korean. We hope that this site will be used not only by learners but also by Japanese language teachers as a reference material for creating teaching materials.
